Robert Morris, Ph.D.

Bob Morris received his Ph.D. in Philosophy from Indiana University in 1984, and a M.S. in Computer Science from Wright State University in 1986. He taught in the Computer Science Department at the Florida Institute of Technology, where he attained the rank of Full Professor. Dr. Morris has spent summers conducting research in artificial intelligence at NASA-JSC (1991-1992) and NASA-Ames Research Center (1995-1997). In 1996 he spent an academic year at the Institute for Interdisciplinary Research in Human and Machine Cognition at the University of West Florida. While there he worked on a Navy-sponsored R&D contract on intelligent aids in navigation. He also worked as a PI for two years on a NASA contract developing a power distribution diagnostic system based on model-based reasoning for a space station.

Most recently, Dr. Morris' research has been focused primarily on problems in . This work has been conducted with researchers in planning and scheduling at NASA Ames. The planning and scheduling group at NASA Ames contains many of the most qualified researchers in this area of AI research. Dr. Morris' primary focus has been on developing techniques for making schedulers more adaptive to changes in characteristics of the scheduling problem. The adaptive scheduling system he implemented with his student while at Ames is currently being employed as a component of the Associate Principal Astronomer, a system for scheduling observations for remote, ground-based telescopes.

Dr. Morris is co-program chair of the International Workshops on Temporal Reasoning, TIME-97 and TIME-98. These two-day workshops, held in Florida in May, have gained recognition for attracting the best researchers in the world in the theory and applications of temporal reasoning (aka, scheduling). He has been a guest editor in of the Journal of Experimental and Theoretical Artificial Intelligence on temporal reasoning, and has been a reviewer for the journals Constraints, Computational Intelligence, and the Journal of Artificial Intelligence.
